Server Issue (Resolved)

Server Issue (Resolved)

by Jonathan Wright (08:04 Apr 20th, 2008)

At around 5am this morning, our monitoring systems reported an error with the server gamma.jabservers.co.uk which, after investigation, showed that there was an issue with the main file-system.

Due to a bug or error (we don't believe this to be a hardware fault), the server set the file-system to read-only mode in order to protect it from damage or degradation.

Although most sites continued to function normally, this did raise issues with sites running on databases and the mail system (along with Plesk itself) on the server.

Upon reaching the data-centre, we made an additional backup of the server before rebooting and fixing the errors. During this time (around 1 hour) a few minor issues were repaired and once given a clean bill of health, it was returned to it's normal running state.

No data appears to have been lost or corrupted and all file-systems are back within normal working parameters. However, while the file-system was read-only, some items such as log files would not have been saved.

Any e-mails which were delivered to the server during this time would have been rejected and held in a queue on the sending server until gamma.jabservers.co.uk was restored. Please give a few hours for all e-mails to be re-sent and re-delivered to you.

We will continue to monitor the server as always and will make a further reboot in a few hours to ensure that there are no further errors or issues (not that this will result in up to 5 minutes of further downtime).

As always, we appreciate the patience and understanding of our valued customers and sincerely apologies for any inconvenience that this may have caused.
