We've been informed by our transit provider, Avensys Networks, that the LINX exchange in London (one of the main peering points, where all ISPs and Internet companies share traffic) is experiencing issues with failing ports. This is causing traffic to bottleneck on others and therefore affecting general transit stability.
To minimise these effects, the ports which we link through at LINX have been disabled and all normal traffic will be re-routed through a separate trunk to Manchester at a different exchange.
There is no, nor has there been, any downtime on any service and affects only a proportion of traffic where the LINX exchange would have been selected as the main route. The effects you would have noticed, if anything, would be intermittent connections or randomly dropped packets resulting in slower-than-normal traffic rates.
However, while the port has been disabled as a method to reach us, other companies, etc. may still be passing traffic through LINX to get to the other trunk and therefore you may remain affected by the intermittent packet loss.
We do not have a timescale for resolution as this is is not related to any of our systems, or our providers. However, steps have been taken to ensure minimal disruption.
If you have any questions or issues relating to this, please reply and I will be happy to discuss it with you.
